4º eso SPEAKING EXAM - VOCABULARY AND STRUCTURES

SPEAKING EXAM: describe a work of art :

1.Name/ artist / date : this work of art ( title) was painted by  ( artist) in (date).

2.Kind of picture and style: landscape, seascape,portrait,still life. Styles: Modern,realistic (representation of objects), abstract (detail is eliminated, sometimes these paintings represent things that are not visual: emotion, sound or spiritual experience), Impressionism/ Cubism : small, thin,  brush  strokes,the subject: landscapes and the movement´s name was derived from Monet´s work: Impression: a sunrise.)

3.Painting techniques: oil -painting on canvas, watercolour, acrylic, charcoal (blending stump), ink, pastel, crayon, materials: paint brush, drawing, painting , watercolour paper, canvas,blending stump.

4.Colours and shapes: bright, cheerful, dull, lovely, warm, cool  colours / flat, curved, three-dimensional, straight, simple shapes.
textures: rough, smooth, soft, sandy.

5.Objects and people : it seems as if..../ the person seems to ....../ the picture shows.. /.in the foreground/ background/ you can see...../.in the middle/centre there is(are)........./ at the top/ at the bottom...on the left/right ..
6.Impression ( artist ´s feelings,)  : photocopy and personal opinion : I( don´t ) like this painting because...., I think... the atmosphere is peaceful, depressing.......

USEFUL WORDS: brush, strokes, shades, dominate, to wet /dip, to portray , to contrast , to create, canvas,light, lines,sunrise (amanecer) sunset ( atardecer -puesta de sol),atmosphere, to connect.

Use adjectives to describe the picture and don´t forget the adjective order:

  opinion-size-age-shape-colour
